At the east end of Altona Beach, at the dog beach, an extensive and imaginative project has been completed. Cyclists now have a raised section along the Coastal Trail that separates them from a dog owners’ underpass giving safe access to the beach. Another win/win.
This has overcome the previously dangerous pinch point for bike riders, dog owners, dogs and children alike. The hazard of sand on the trail has also been avoided.
The BUG has regular meetings with local city councils’ officials to discuss cycling safety issues. Both matters were discussed with Hobsons Bay City Council some time ago along with other suggestions that have been addressed. It is most heartening to see real results from a listening and dynamic council.
