Route: Federation Trail

Opened in October 2006, the Federation Trail has been a boost for cycling in the western suburbs, providing the basis for a direct east-west cycling route. Most of the trail runs along the historic “Main Outfall Sewer” reservation.

Meetings

We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm, at Laverton Community Hall (corner of Crown Street and Railway Avenue, Melway reference: 53 D10, Google Maps).

Everyone is welcome to our meetings, with car parking onsite and bike parking inside!

Advocacy

Our main advocacy efforts have been:

  • A response to the East-West Link Report
  • Liaising with Hobsons Bay City Council about the local TravelSmart map
  • Federation Trail surface (which was resurfaced in 2007!)
  • Safety concerns about bollards around Cherry Lake

Rides

For the path pedaller interested in fun, friends, and coffee, we do two free social rides per month, suitable for most abilities. For the lycra-clad road warrior, we do free monthly road rides in the western suburbs.

At least twice per year we team up with our neighbour, MazzaBUG, for a bicycle maintenance session at BAC Bikes.

Every so often we get a little more adventurous and explore Victoria on a weekend ride (or longer?), such as our recent Lilydale to Warburton overnight trip.

All rides are free and open to anyone who would like to participate. After two rides, we ask you become a member of BayWest BUG.
